Pigeonholing artists makes life a lot easier for a critic. Once you have someone cornered as a "rapper" or a "bluesman" or a "folkie," the work is half done. That's why G Love is such a fun conundrum.
Rather than dedicate himself to a genre, G Love seems to be more fascinated with the infinite forms of the groove. Since their debut disc, his tight little trio has offered up delicious platters serving everything from delta blues to hip-hop to country. This latest effort is equally diverse, with skittering breakbeats and free-flowing rap on "Dreamin'," a bit of flamenco flavor on "Rodeo Clowns," and the laid-back soul of "Relax." While a few tracks seem less than inspired (like the uninteresting "Friday Night," a tired tale of dancefloor infidelity), G Love keeps it real with more insightful tales of teenage escape ("No Turning Back") and sloppy friends ("Roaches"). It's not his best, but it's darn fine work anyway. So dig in, there's bound to be something here you'll find tasty.
